Bobcats trample Cross County
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats rolled to a 48-6 victory over Cross County in 2A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Cherry Valley.
Eric Wilcoxson put the Bobcats on the scoreboard with a 19-yard run with 9:29 to play in the first quarter. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 6-0.
Cross County returned the ensuing kickoff deep into Bobcat territory to set up the tying score. Thunderbird quarterback Tyler Houston capped the short drive with a four-yard run with 4:20 to play in the quarter. The Walnut Ridge defense stopped the conversion attempt and the period ended with the score knotted 6-6.
Walnut Ridge broke the game open with three scores in the second quarter. Tyler Clement ran for a two-yard touchdown and Wilcoxson added the conversion to give the Cats at 14-6 lead with 9:18 to play in the first half.
Bobcat quarterback Zach Crisler passed 14 yards to Wilcoxson to extend Walnut Ridge's lead to 20-6 with 5:25 remaining in the period.
Clement scored his second touchdown of the evening on a one-yard run with 2:15 to play before halftime. Crisler added the conversion on a keeper to close out the scoring in the first half, as the Bobcats carried a 28-6 lead into halftime.
The Walnut Ridge offense continued its production in the second half. Crisler connected with Wilcoxson on a 36-yard touchdown strike to extend the Bobcats' lead to 34-6 early in the third quarter.
Cole Hicks scored the Bobcats' next points on a seven-yard run with 6:52 to play in the quarter. Jesse Webb kicked the PAT for a 41-6 lead.
Chase Flippo added a 27-yard touchdown run with 7:30 to play in the game. Cason McQuay's extra point set the final score.
Crisler was three-of-five passing, for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Wilcoxson led the Bobcats in rushing, with 113 yards and two touchdowns on eight attempts. Clement finished with 66 yards and two touchdowns on six attempts, and Crisler added 65 yards on five carries.
Wilcoxson had two receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Levi Lewis led Walnut Ridge with 15 tackles. Hicks recorded 11 tackles, and Rowdy Ditto had 10 tackles.
Walnut Ridge improved to 2-1 in conference play and 4-1 overall. The Bobcats host Marked Tree for homecoming Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
