WR sweeps Pangburn
Following a memorable run in the state football playoffs, the Walnut Ridge senior boys were finally able to begin the basketball season. The Bobcats opened the season against three 2A-3 Conference opponents last Monday, facing the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds at Sharum Gymnasium before taking to the road to take on Cedar Ridge and Pangburn.
Zach Crisler scored 18 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter, as Walnut Ridge nipped Pangburn 67-64 on Friday.
Pangburn had the lead for most of the game, and led 48-39 after three quarters. Led by Crisler, Walnut Ridge outscored the Tigers 28-16 in the final period to take the win.
Eric Wilcoxson had 11 points for the Bobcats. Hunter Flippo finished with six points and eight rebounds.
In senior girls action, the Lady Bobcats trailed for most of the game before staging a fourth-quarter rally to edge Pangburn 63-55.
Audrey McElrath scored 10 of her 18 points in the final frame to fuel the rally. Allyson McQuay finished with 17 points, and Hannah Massey had 12.
The Cedar Ridge Timberwolves pulled away in the third quarter to defeat Walnut Ridge 57-43 on Dec. 4 at Newark.
The Bobcats led 14-9 after one quarter, but fell behind 22-19 at the end of the half. Cedar Ridge stretched their lead to 41-27 in the third period.
Crisler was the Bobcats' high-point man, with 18, while Matt Cox added 15 points.
The Walnut Ridge junior high boys defeated Cedar Ridge 51-35.
Spencer Wilson led Walnut Ridge with 15 points. Martin Crisler and Luke Wall each had nine points.
In senior girls action, the Cedar Ridge Lady Timberwolves topped the Lady Cats 63-47.
McQuay had 12 points, and Massey added 11 for Walnut Ridge.
Crisler scored 40 points, as the Walnut Ridge senior boys opened the season with a 60-48 victory over the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds on Dec. 3.
Zeb Gipson led Sloan-Hendrix with 13 points, and Blake Bennett added 11 points.
In junior boys action, Wilson scored 21 points to lead Walnut Ridge to a 54-38 win over the Greyhounds. Martin Crisler had 12 points, and Wall added 11 for the junior Cats.
Wesley Friend hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Walnut Ridge seventh-grade boys past Sloan-Hendrix 26-25 on Saturday. Daniel Wake led Walnut Ridge with 10 points.
Walnut Ridge will play at Cotter on Dec. 20 and will host Salem on Jan. 10. These contests were scheduled for earlier this season, but were postponed due to the Bobcats' participation in the state football playoffs.
