Austin James Kendall

Troy and Sarah Kendall of Pocahontas have announced the birth of a son, born on Dec. 20, 2012, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro.

The baby weighed six pounds, one ounce, and has been named Austin James Kendall. He has one sibling, Addison Brea Ward.

Grandparents are Paul and Kathy Kendall and Susan Stallings, all of Pocahontas, and the late James Stallings, and Chris Licari of Loves Park, Ill., and the late Jim Licari.

Kaiden Brantley Jay Smith

Hunter Smith and Miranda Sullens of Walnut Ridge have announced the birth of a son, born Dec. 20, 2012, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro.

The baby weighed seven pounds, six ounces, and has been named Kaiden Brantley Jay Smith.

Grandparents are Larry and Keri Taylor of Hoxie, Jamey and Kelli Sullens of Walnut Ridge, Glen and Tara Smith of Imboden and Deana Quarry of Walnut Ridge and the late Jason Quarry.

Great-grandparents are Dennis Truxler of Hoxie, Sheri Truxler and Jay and Judy Tribble, all of Walnut Ridge, Sue Bentley of Cave City, and Mike Sullens and Gilbert and Sue Smith, all of Imboden.

Brenda Bookout

Brenda Bookout, 66, of Walnut Ridge, died Dec. 28, 2012, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 20, 1946, in Walnut Ridge, she lived most of her life in Lawrence County and was of the Baptist belief. She worked as a security guard at the Newport prison for 12 years and at Frolic for 32 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Shelby and Johnnie Cole Bookout; and two brothers, Jerry Bookout and William Bookout.

Survivors include a son, Gary Bookout, Walnut Ridge and fiancˇ Amy Dail; a granddaughter, Brooke Bookout, Swifton, and fiancˇ Zack Brunson; a grandson, Brett Bookout and wife Jade, Batesville; and two great-grandchildren, Zachery Landyn Brunson and Addilyn Bookout.

Funeral is today at 10 a.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home with Lloyd Clark officiating. Burial will be in Austin Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bub Whittaker, Chuck Bennum, Greg Smith, Greg Bunn, Alan Simms and Heath Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be Zachery Brunson and Kevin Rogers.

Carolyn Jean Fortenberry

Carolyn Jean Fortenberry, 65, of Tuckerman, died Dec. 26, 2012, at Lindley Care Center in Newport.

Born March 8, 1947, in Saffell, she was a home health aide for 24 years and a member of Faith Assembly Church in Tuckerman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Claude Fortenberry; her parents, Alonzo Columbus and Rosie Lea Handley Huskey; two brothers, Donnie Huskey and Bill Huskey; and two sisters, Virgie Sullivan and Eveline Huskey Miller.

Survivors include a son, Shawn McAllister, Leavenworth, Kans.; a stepdaughter, Kim; two brothers, Phillip Huskey, Tuckerman, and Johnny Huskey, Ravenden Springs; and three sisters, Madaline McIntosh, Newport, Earline Eickhorst, Hermitage, Mo., and Sharon Sales, Swifton.

Funeral is today at 2 p.m. at Faith Assembly Church in Tuckerman with Rev. Brandon Gates officiating. Burial will be in Dowell's Chapel Cemetery in Tuckerman under the direction of Cox Funeral Home.

Visitation is today from 1 p.m. until time of the service.

Douglas Franklin Gifford

Douglas Franklin Gifford, 50, of Paragould, died Dec. 24, 2012, at his home.

Born Sept. 20, 1962, in Paragould, he was the son of the late Doss Franklin and Mary Leta Friar Gifford.

Survivors include a brother, Darrell Gifford, Jonesboro; and a stepmother, Patricia Gifford, Paragould.

Funeral was Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cox Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge with Charles Carnes officiating. Burial was in Greene County Memorial Gardens at Paragould.

Pallbearers were Richard Gambill, Mike Noles Sr., Mike Noles Jr., Jason Gifford, Tobin Henderson and Chris Morris. Honorary pallbearers were the members of Jonesboro Masonic Lodge 129.

James Walter Johnson

James Walter Johnson, 71, of Evening Shade, brother of Olen Johnson of Smithville, died Dec. 30, 2012, at Fulton County Hospital in Salem. Graveside service was Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Maxwell Cemetery under the direction of Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.

Faye Kinzer

Faye Kinzer, 75, of Ravenden, died Dec. 23, 2012, in Jonesboro.

Born July 14, 1937, she lived in Ravenden for many years after moving from Louisiana. She was of the Baptist belief.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ester Lejeune Burnas; her parents, Willie and Ollie Chaney Bradham; two sisters, Willie Eugene Bradham and Hilda Bradham Gill.

Survivors include her husband, Cliff Kinzer; two daughters, Tonya Stacy and Gobbie Milgrim, both of Ravenden; a son, Billy Lejeune, Louisiana; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Friday at Cox Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge with Justin Heck officiating. Burial was Saturday at New Zion Cemetery in Kentwood, La.

Inez Penn

Inez Penn, 104, of Lynn, died Dec. 31, 2012, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center.

Born July 25, 1908, in Powhatan, she was the daughter of Clay and Leora Harris Boatenhammer. She lived most of her life in Lawrence County and was a member of the Lynn Church of Christ. She worked in the cafeteria at Lynn Public Schools for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Penn; three sisters, Coy Bristow, Bernice Boatenhammer and Eunice Boatenhammer; a brother, Brian Boatenhammer; and a grandson, Eddie Russell.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Russell, Lynn; a sister, Wanda Baker, St. Louis; a granddaughter, Carolyn Spades, Trumann; six great-grandchildren, Connie Mullen, Cindy Franks, Randy Spades, Jennifer Short, Paula Davis and Tracey Burns; nine great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral is Friday at 2 p.m. at the Lynn Church of Christ with Kenny Townsley officiating. Burial will be in Dry Creek Cemetery under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home of Walnut Ridge and Lynn.

Visitation is Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the church.

Jerry Simmons

Jerry Simmons, 63, of Portia, died Dec. 30, 2012, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born May 23, 1949, at Sedgwick, he was a former employee of Wheeler Brick in Jonesboro and was a member of Hoxie First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Ethel Dodd Wood.

Survivors include a son, Steve Simmons, Jonesboro; and a daughter, Lisa Simmons, Jonesboro.

Graveside service is Thursday at 12:30 p.m. with Bro. Rowdy Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Markham Cemetery under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.

Visitation is Thursday from 11 a.m. until noon at the funeral home.

Tommie Tolson

Tommie Jean Tolson, 87, of Walnut Ridge, passed away Dec. 25, 2012, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born June 19, 1925, in Dalton, she was the daughter of Everett and Mazie Bailey Stubblefield. She was united in marriage for 66 years to Billy Ray Tolson, whom she married on Oct. 5, 1946. She was a Southwestern Bell telephone operator, a field representative for (NORC) University of Chicago and a homemaker.

She was an active volunteer, including Welcome Wagon Hostess in Walnut Ridge, Lawrence Co. Historical Society, Meals on Wheels Coordinator for Walnut Ridge, Lawrence Co. Food Bank, Adult Literacy Coach, Lawrence Co. Resource Council, Lawrence Co. Hospice Coordinator, Gideon International Women's Auxiliary, First Baptist Church Sunday School Teacher, Women's Missionary Union, Vacation Bible School, Youth Mission Groups and various mission trips.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; and a sister, Nadine Pierce of Nashville, Tenn.

She is survived by four sons, Ron and Marsha Tolson of Little Rock, Brent and Cheryl Tolson of Winfield, Kans., Barry and Martha Tolson of Jonesboro, and Phillip Tolson of Walnut Ridge; a sister, Mary Ellen Dearborn of Rosamond, Calif.; five grandchildren, Stephanie Adams of Little Rock, Matthew Tolson of Rogers, Jennifer Schmitt of Lake Jackson, Texas, Kimberly Tolson of Lewiston, Idaho, and Drew Tolson of Jonesboro; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey Adams of Little Rock, Cameron and Maddison Schmitt, both of Lake Jackson, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral was Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Walnut Ridge with Bro. Mark Harris officiating. Burial was in Lawrence Memorial Park under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Matt, Drew, Mike and Wendell Tolson, Charles Adams and Jack Allison. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Davis and Frankie Wilcoxson.

Billy Whitacre

Billy Whitacre, 80, of Ravenden, died Dec. 23, 2012.

Born April 22, 1932, in North Webster, Ind., he served as a corporal in the U.S. Army from 1953-1956. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Whitacre.

Graveside service was held Saturday at Baker Cemetery in Ozark Acres under the direction of Heath Funeral Home Oak Hill Chapel.
