WR enjoys winning week
The Walnut Ridge High School baseball team enjoyed a successful week on the diamond. In addition to winning the Lawrence County Tournament on Saturday, the Bobcats recorded five wins earlier in the week.
The Bobcats hosted 2A-2 Conference foe Tuckerman at Stewart Park on Thursday. The teams battled through four scoreless innings before the Bulldogs plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Walnut Ridge responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 2-2, and took the lead with two more runs in the sixth.
Walnut Ridge held on for the 4-2 victory, as Range Weeks held the Bulldogs scoreless in the seventh inning. Weeks earned the complete-game victory, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and striking out three.
Offensively, Cash Lee went 2-for-3, which included a single that scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and had two stolen bases. Zach Crisler also had two hits and one RBI, and Eric Wilcoxson drove in a run.
Walnut Ridge took to the road for a non-conference matchup with the Manila Lions on April 3.
The Cats jumped to an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but Manila tied the contest with single runs in the second and third innings. Walnut Ridge took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fourth, and broke the game open with six runs in the fifth for a 9-2 advantage.
The Bobcats extended the lead to 13-2 with four runs in the sixth inning. Manila scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to set the final score, as neither team scored in the seventh inning.
Ryan Vaughn started on the mound and pitched six strong innings. He allowed five runs, all of which were unearned, on six hits, while registering nine strikeouts. Layne Ditto pitched the final inning and recorded two strikeouts.
Cole Hicks and Lane Kennedy each went 3-for-5 at the plate for Walnut Ridge with one RBI apiece, and each scored two runs. Crisler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored three runs. Hunter Flippo had two hits and scored three runs, and Wilcoxson had two hits and scored two runs. Payton Poole had a hit and an RBI and Lee drove in two runs.
Walnut Ridge hammered conference opponent Cotter 17-1 on April 2 at Cotter.
The game was tied 1-1 after one inning before the Bobcats exploded for five runs in the second inning, six in the fourth and five in the fifth to bring the run rule into effect.
Hicks went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and scored three runs. Poole and Zach Crisler each had two hits, an RBI and scored two runs. Wilcoxson and Kennedy each had two hits and two RBIs, and Ditto had two hits.
Weeks had one hit, two RBIs and scored three runs. Lee had one hit and two RBIs. Flippo and Tyler Andrews each had one hit and one RBI, and Martin Crisler had an RBI.
Wilcoxson pitched a complete game, allowing one run on three hits, with five strikeouts.
The Bobcats opened the week with a doubleheader against Cedar Ridge at Newark on April 1.
Zach Crisler hurled a two-hit shutout, as the Bobcats took the first game 5-0. Crisler struck out seven Timberwolves batters.
Crisler also led Walnut Ridge at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs. Flippo had one hit, one RBI and scored two runs. Hicks had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Lee and Wilcoxson each added one hit.
In the second game, Flippo went 3-for-4 and had five RBIs to lead the Bobcats to a 7-1 victory.
Walnut Ridge scored three runs in the first and two in the second for an early 5-0 lead. Cedar Ridge scored their run in the third inning. The Bobcats closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth inning.
Also for the Bobcats, Zach Crisler went 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Kennedy had a hit and an RBI. Hicks and Wilcoxson each had a hit and scored two runs, and Lee had one hit.
Ditto was the winning pitcher, recording seven strikeouts in four innings of work. Baron Estes pitched the final three innings to earn the save.
