Cats record homecoming victory
For the second consecutive week, the Walnut Ridge Bobcats' football game was decided in overtime. This week the Bobcats were able to send the homecoming crowd home happy by defeating Cross County 38-32 behind a four-touchdown performance from Cole Hicks on Friday night at Sexton Field.
Four times on the evening, Walnut Ridge would grab the lead in regulation with a touchdown and conversion, only to see the Thunderbirds answer with their own score and conversion to even the game.
The Bobcats opened the scoring on a five-yard run by Cole Hicks with 9:34 to play in the first quarter. Quarterback Tyler Andrews added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
Cross County responded with a drive that resulted in Marquez Turner's five-yard run later in the period. Anfernee Davis's conversion knotted the game at 8-8.
Walnut Ridge scored the only points of the second quarter on Hicks' one-yard run, followed by his two-point conversion, to take a 16-8 lead into halftime.
The Thunderbirds tied the game 16-16 on a 30-yard run by Davis early in the third period. Davis passed to Brayden Johnson for the tying conversion. Hicks broke free for a 53-yard touchdown dash and Andrews added the conversion to put the Bobcats back in the lead, 24-16.
Davis outraced Bobcat defenders for a 65-yard touchdown with 3:53 to play in the third quarter. He then passed to Torrence Townsend for the conversion to send the contest to the fourth quarter squared at 24 apiece.
Hicks scored his fourth touchdown of the game on an 11-yard run, and then ran for the conversion, to put Walnut Ridge ahead 32-24 with 7:32 remaining in the game.
Once again, Cross County would answer the Bobcats' touchdown with one of their own. Turner scored on a 10-yard run, and Davis added the conversion to tie the game.
No one was able to score during the final 4:30 of regulation and the teams headed to overtime deadlocked at 32-32.
Cross County was on offense first, but the Bobcat defense turned in a huge series, stopping the Thunderbirds on downs.
Walnut Ridge needed little time in finding the end zone, as Andrews scored on a three-yard run on the Bobcats' second offensive play to end the game.
Hicks finished with 182 yards rushing, while Tyler Binkley carried eight times for 57 yards. Andrews completed five-of-eight passes, for 47 yards. Shelby Wake had two receptions for 37 yards.
Walnut Ridge improved to 2-1 in 2A-3 Conference play and 3-3 overall. The Bobcats play at Marked Tree on Friday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
After a week off, the Walnut Ridge junior high football team will be back in action on Thursday, when they travel to Rector. Game time is 7 p.m.
