Mustangs beat Earle,
lead conference

The Hoxie Mustangs remained undefeated and gained sole possession of first place in the 3A-3 Conference after a 21-12 victory over Earle on Friday night at Crider Field.

Hoxie jumped on the Bulldogs in the first quarter, when Gunner Cook capped a Mustang drive with a four-yard run at the 4:23 mark. Casey Middlecoff kicked the extra-point for a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs added to their lead in the second quarter when quarterback Cole Sears passed 31 yards to James Johnson for a touchdown with 6:46 to play in the half. Middlecoff's PAT gave Hoxie a 14-0 lead, which they carried into halftime.

Earle scored on an 87-yard pass play to cut Hoxie's lead to 14-6 with 8:45 to play in the third quarter.

Sears scored on an 11-yard run with 7:54 to play in the game, and Middlecoff added the PAT to stretch the Mustangs' lead to 21-6. Hoxie was about to put the game away with another score when the Bulldogs picked up a Mustang fumble and returned it 97 yards for the game's final points with 5:26 to play.

Hoxie's ground game rolled up 246 yards rushing, led by Cook's 119 yards on 29 carries. Sears added 88 yards on 23 attempts, while Colton Brown had 84 yards on nine carries. Kyle Wilson finished with 12 yards on three carries.

Sears completed two-of-six passes for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Johnson had a 31-yard touchdown reception, and Slade Sullens had a 13-yard reception.

Hoxie improved its record to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. The Mustangs will host Manila for homecoming on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
