Lady Mustangs win Hornet Classic
The Hoxie senior high volleyball team won the championship of the Hornet Classic on Saturday at Harrisburg. The Lady Mustangs defeated Walnut Ridge in the finals 23-25, 27-25, 15-7.
Hoxie advanced to the finals following a 25-22, 25-17 victory over Trumann in the semifinals.
Hoxie went undefeated in pool play, with wins against Trumann, West Memphis and Cedar Ridge. The Lady Mustangs advanced to tournament play as the number-one seed and received a bye into the semifinals.
For the tournament, Courtney Sears was 14-of-14 serving, with one ace, and had 27 kills, seven digs and 22 blocks. Grace Hall was 50-of-53 from the line, with 10 aces, and had six assists, 26 kills, three digs and 10 blocks.
Maria Fry was 22-of-26 serving and had 18 kills and 11 digs. Emily Hatfield had nine digs, and Zoe Willfond added 34 assists. Krista Vankirk had 49 assists, 14 kills and six blocks, and Sequoia Irvin had nine kills and two blocks.
Hoxie's senior and junior high teams each recorded easy victories over Cedar Ridge on Thursday at Hoxie.
The senior Lady Mustangs won their match in three sets, 25-11, 25-17, 25-9.
Vankirk was nine-of-nine serving and had 13 assists, five kills, four digs and a block. Sears had six kills, four digs and three blocks. Hall finished with 12 kills and two digs. Fry had five kills and 10 digs. Emily Hatfield had an assist and two digs. Zoe Willfond contributed 17 assists and one dig. Chasity Kingsland had four kills, and Brooke Willfond had a dig. Sequoia Irvin had an assist and two kills. Cheyenne Hatfield and Allyson Smith each had a kill.
Hoxie won the junior high match 25-9, 25-8.
Kerry Woodson was 10-of-10 serving with one kill and had two assists. Katelyn Jamison was five-of-five serving, with an ace, and had a dig and a kill. Kelsey Moody was eight-of-eight servings, with an ace, and had nine assists and three kills. Kayla Roberts was nine-of-nine from the line, with an ace, and had five kills and a block, and Sydney Gillham had five kills.
Hoxie traveled to Piggott on Oct. 8 and dropped three closely contested sets to the Lady Mohawks, 22-25, 22-25, 22-25.
Sears went eight-of-eight from the service line and had nine kills, nine digs and two blocks. Hall was eight-of-eight from the line, with eight kills, four digs and a block. Fry had three kills and 16 digs. Emily Hatfield had one kill and three digs. Zoe Willfond finished with eight assists and a dig. Kingsland had two digs and two kills. Vankirk added 14 assists, three kills and a dig. Brooke Willfond had seven digs, and Irvin had an assist.
Hoxie's junior high team defeated Piggott 25-23, 25-18.
Jamison recorded one kill and three digs. Moody was six-of-six serving, with two aces, and had six assists and four kills, and Roberts added five kills. Woodson went six-of-six from the line, with two aces, and had four kills and two digs. Sidney Gillham was six-of-six from the line, with three aces, and had six kills and a block. Kenzie Orrick and Baylee Rash each had two digs, and Christin Barker added three digs.
