St. Jude Marathon is inspiring

Attending Saturday's St. Jude Memphis Marathon was a first-time experience for us. Anna Bland and friends from Arkansas State University were running in the half marathon.

The marathon is a major event, but Renee and I didn't know exactly what to expect. We knew the half marathon would begin at 8 a.m. and that Anna would finish some time after 10 a.m. We could track her specific race progress through the mobile tracking app offered to keep up with runners.

As we crossed the I-40 bridge into Memphis, we saw vehicles parked on various levels of the river bluff, bringing to mind icing on a multi-tiered cake. Parking places along streets and in lots were full, but as we circled one lot, a fellow said he was leaving and that we could take his spot.

Pictures of the Past

This photo, taken by the late Barney Sellers, shows Main Street in Walnut Ridge in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The streetcar tracks making the corner and running down Main Street are visible, and the lights that line the street are almost identical to the ones that stand today. The Grill neon sign is at the corner as it is once again after being restored. The Lee's Cafe sign (where Jades is currently located) shows there were two cafes right next door to each other. There are also two drugstores on the left side of Main Street. Warner's Drugstore is where The Venue is today, and the drugstore further down is Sexton's drugstore, which at the time was across the street from where it is today. The first three storefronts on the near right are no longer there. The Western Auto Store on the right is where the K-1 Fitness is located today, and the old First National Bank (formerly Lawrence County Bank) is on the same corner that the current bank is located on now. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
